Action/Adventure/Exploration
Explore a frozen wasteland as you battle enemies in top down arcade action combat.

Korora was heavily inspired by a trip to Bruny Island and waiting in a particularly cold night to see the penguins for what seemed like hours and wondering what they were exploring and why. Having decided on the protagonist (Penguins) and a theme of exploration the rest of the ideas were developed with these in mind. Focusing on exploration, this lead to finding and comparing ideas for classic and modern adventure games, The Legend of Zelda being one such game, itself being inspired by its creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s experiences of exploration in surrounding woodlands as a boy. Korora hopes to achieve a similar feeling of excitement while exploring its world and build on that with fun relaxing exploration paired with exciting tense combat popular in many modern games.

The target audience of the game would be people that are fans of action/adventure games and exploration.  Its audience primarily will be composed of people who enjoy casual gaming, as the game will not feature many elements that cater to the hardcore players, such as hard difficulty, or huge amounts of collectables, and will instead be a more relaxing exploration game, with hopefully enough to see and do to keep it fun.

Korora’s backstory will be set in a world where penguins are the top life forms, forming villages and communities. As the protagonist you will be sent out on a ‘coming of age’ quest to leave the safety of your penguin community where you grew up and travel out into the world in search of some item of value to the community from the wasteland of the world that is left behind. On your journey you will run into bandit penguins that have been cast out and live in the wastelands, other monsters that will prey on you, and find interesting and unique pieces of
backstory that might explain the world you are now in.

Korora will feature:

  • A simple story where the protagonist will need to leave the safety of his village on a quest to retrieve an item of worth from the icy wasteland that the world has become. Potential for multiple items that can be found around the world for slightly different endings.
  • A open world tile based map with a few different areas to explore, it will be filled with basic enemies and potential for boss enemies.
    And example of this style of map would be from Zelda: Links Awakening, where you have multiple areas and dungeons you can explore.

  • Simple but engaging combat where you can attack and dodge enemies. Might include abilities in which you could perform special attacks such as penguin body slams,  penguin slaps, or throwing hand grenades.
